Frequently Asked
Questions

What is IMMEX?

IMMEX stands for Interactive Multi-Media EXercises. IMMEX is a suite of software applications that challenge a student’s problem solving skills and provide teachers with real time assessment tools.

What is the objective of the IMMEX Project?

Our goal is to develop and promote learning models, based on our vast collection of performance data. The use of IMMEX software has been scientifically shown to have significant positive effects on students’ understanding of science content as well as the process of scientific investigation. By integrating our multimedia simulations into a unique web-based learning platform for modeling strategic thinking and problem solving, we are able to help teachers in over 4,000 classes internationally.

Who owns IMMEX?

IMMEX is or has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the US Dept. of Education, the California Dept. of Education, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the American Chemical Society Examinations Institute, the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the University of California. All rights to the intellectual property are held by The Learning Chameleon, Inc.

How much does IMMEX cost?

Teachers from schools and institutions listed with the National Center for Education Statistics may use IMMEX at this time free of charge. The NCES database contains nearly 100,000 entries from public & private schools, libraries, colleges, and universities.

Schools and districts who wish to elevate their use to include problem-solving simulations designed to address specific curricular needs and/or promote professional development of teachers, are encouraged to seek funding to support these practices. We may be able to offer help. Contact us for more information.

How do I get my ID/Password/Login URL?

For Students: if you’ve forgotten your ID or password, you need to request it from your teacher or your school’s technical coordinator. IMMEX staff will not give ID/Password information to students.

For Teachers: if you’ve forgotten your login information, there is a link in the upper right corner of this page to the LOGIN/PASSWORD RETREIVAL page of our website. Your login ID is your email address. Your password and URL for your Login Page will be sent to your email address. (A URL is a web page address).

May I get the answers to the IMMEX problems before my class runs them?

No. We do not provide answer keys. IMMEX Problems are delivered in “sets”. A problem set is a collection of cases each with a unique answer. Each case is delivered at random so the first problem a student runs is not necessarily the first case in the problem set.
We encourage teachers to run the problems themselves and become familiar with the problem space prior to granting access to their students.

What are Strategic Performance Maps, and how do I use them?

Strategic Performance Maps, (aka; Strategy Path Maps, Search Path Maps, SPM’s) are graphic representations of a student’s performance. Content items in IMMEX simulations are tracked as students choose to view them. SPM’s show menu items that were selected, the sequence of selection, and the amount of time spent viewing each item. They also show item frequency, score, and whether or not the problem was solved. SPM’s can quickly show if a student gathered enough information necessary to arrive at the correct solution (or were they guessing?). Looking at SPM’s of subsequent performances can indicate if a student is making progress (i.e. are their strategies getting better or worse?). SPM example.
